September Class 1st and 8th

At 4:30 ('ish for those who work later) to 7:30 at Ever'man Natural Food Store on Garden Street, I will be teaching about "How to be smarter than your camera." It will be your hands working your camera, covering everything from turning the camera on, to how Aperture effects Depth of Field. If these are things you've never heard, or have heard but can't find a simple explanation, that's what my class offers, I will make it simple.

I. Rationale:

For people that have never had a camera’s function explained, photography holds a certain amount of mystery that limits the potential they have to become better photographers. It is a simple matter of not taking the time to use the resources they have, or those resources not working to teach the user what, and how a camera works.

II. Course Aims and Objectives:

Aims

To provide an understanding of how a camera and digital photography works that will allow the student to grow as a photographer.

Specific Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, students will have functional understanding of the following theories:

Shutter Speed

Aperture vs. Depth-of-Field

ISO Speed

f/stop

Auto / Manual Focus

Instruction will include Basic Photography Tips. Those are:

Read The Owner’s Manual

Get Down to Their Level

Know Your Controls

How You Hold Your Camera DOES Make a Difference

Shoot in both Portrait and Landscape Format

Move in Close

Don't Place your Subject Exactly in the Middle (Rule of Thirds)

Make Sure Your Camera is Focused on the Right Thing

What is Important to Know About Lighting?

Continue to Educate Yourself (web sites)

Camera buttons and functions will be explained in depth, and how to use them.

III. Format and Procedures:

Class time and structure will include six hours of instruction, spaced over a two day period. The class will be held in a lecture and discussion format. Students will be asked to share their interpretations of many aspects of photography and camera function, and open discussion will be encouraged.

IV. My Assumptions

When a person walks out of a retail store with a new camera, many of them do not have a solid understanding of how a camera works, or what makes good photographs. The owner’s manual can seem like a foreign language to someone not familiar with the concepts of photography, and it can be very difficult trying to learn out of a book that assumes the operator already is acquainted those concepts. The purpose of this course is to be the bridge of understanding between the language barrier of the manual, and those who have a desire to get more out of their camera.
